What are Mini Courses?

Mini Courses are fun, inexpensive, non-credit courses offered by the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU). They are held on weeknights or weekends, so they will not conflict with classes, labs or conferences. Locations will be announced or found at the link above.

How often are classes held?

Most classes are an hour and a half long. They are held for 9 classes during the Fall and Winter, usually once a week. Please check the schedule on a regular basis as courses may not run each week due to holidays or space conflicts.

How much do they cost?

The prices range from $45 to $70 per course. They cover most equipment that may be needed for the class such as photocopies, music, and ingredients.

Where are they held?

Mostly in the Shatner building on McTavish Street, beside the Brown Building. Some may be held off campus.

I am absolutely fascinated by the idea but I don’t go to McGill. Can I take Mini Courses?

Of course you can! Non-McGill students just pay an extra $5 for registration.

Tell me more about the language classes.

The language classes mainly focus on conversation and cultural knowledge. For some languages, we have both beginner and intermediate classes.

Can I get a refund if…?

  1. Not enough people have enrolled in a class and it has been cancelled by Mini Courses.

You can get either a full refund or credit for another course being offered. If the other course costs more than what you paid, simply pay the difference.

  1. I decide I do not want to take the course after all.

If there is room in another course, you can sign up for it and pay any difference in cost. Otherwise, NO REFUNDS.

  1. I decided I do not want to take the course I registered for (and have not yet attended); instead, I want to take a different Mini Course.

If there is room in the other course, you can sign up for it and pay any difference in cost. Otherwise, NO REFUNDS.

  1. I go to the first class and decide I do not like the course/teacher.

NO REFUND.

  1. I miss one class and want a refund of 1/8 of what I paid.

NO REFUND. We do not do “per class” refunds!

  1. Class had to be made up during the make up week, but I could not attend.

NO REFUND. See #5.

  1. I have a reason that is not listed above.

E-mail us at info@minicourses.ca. Your situation will be judged on a case-by-case basis. However, know that you register for Mini Courses knowing that our official policy is NO REFUNDS except in the event an entire course (not individual class!) is cancelled!

Are there any pre-requisites?

There are absolutely no pre-requisites. We welcome people from all backgrounds and skill lvels.

How do I register?

In-person during registration week (January 11-15), Late Registration (January 18-21) & Activities Night (January 20) Click here for exact times and locations. Late registration is $5 more per course.

When do classes start?

Most classes start the week of February 1.

Why aren’t you offering “Conversational Zulu” classes?

Contact us with all your ideas for new courses. You never know which one of your ideas might make its way into next semester’s schedule. And if you can teach it – all the better!

I don’t like my teacher. He/she doesn’t show up on time and I don’t think I’m learning anything new.

We encourage all feedback. Email us at info@minicourses.ca and we will get back to you ASAP.

What is this “Make up week” on the course description page?
